Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Virtual Garage

UNIT9 collaborated with Bose, Synergy and the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team to create a physical installation that let users experience the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Garage virtually, through the power of sound.

Using head orientation and positional tracking users were free to explore the two garages, dynamically discovering the different sounds within – mechanics working, wheel guns triggering, engineers discussing strategy and press interviews with drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. All the audio was heard through the Bose QC35 wireless headphones, putting the product at the centre of the experience. Users were also guided by audio driven animation that was projected in the space, creating a fully immersive sensory experience.

I was Executive Producer and had a Producer, Creative Director, Technical Lead plus full project team working on the UNIT9 team. Using a third party for construction and binaural sound recordings.

The first public install was in Austin, Texas are more are being considered for 2017 following the success of the installation. Here is the teaser for the first installation and the digital version of the experience is here.

Tech: Positional tracking - RadarTouch, Head orientation - IMU mounted in the QC35 headphones

Garage experience: Unity, Speaker playback & projection mapping: Watchout.
